At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
