Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President and Colombia's president have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, further raising tensions bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Claims

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the US president suggested similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Strained Relationship

This nation for decades served as a staunch collaborator of Washington in the fight against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have worsened markedly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom demobilised after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Firm Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he stated.

"The US president speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will turn into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the president, whom many of Colombians loves and respects, they will release the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected the presidency.

"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I shall resume arms again," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's protection team had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, but voices from all sides of the ideological divide have rejected the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Pressure

American authorities revoked Petro’s visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. Months later, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, the first lady and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously the US was building up its forces in the region and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out attacks on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
